Process of HIRARC

If last entry discussed about The purpose of HIRARC and HIRARC Planning Activities in Hazard Identification topic, Risk Assessment and Risk Controlthis time we continue this topic to Process of HIRARC.

HIRARC process requires four simple steps:

a. classify work activities;
b. identify hazards;
c. conduct risk assessment (analyze and estimate the risk of each hazard), by determining or estimating
                 i. likelihood of occurrence, and
                ii. the severity of the hazard;
d. decide whether the risk is acceptable and apply control measures (if necessary).

Classify Work Activities

Classify work activities according to their similarity, such as:

  i. geographical or physical conditions inside / outside the premises;
 ii. stage in the production process / service;
iii. not too big activity, like building a car;
iv. not too small activity, for example fix the nut; or
 v. tasks that have been assigned, for example, loading, packing, mixing, repair the door.

Hazard identification

The purpose of hazard identification is to determine the critical operations of tasks, ie tasks that pose significant risk to the safety and health of workers as well as highlighting those hazards pertaining to certain equipment due to energy sources, working conditions or activities performed. Hazards can be divided into three main groups, health hazards, safety hazards, and environmental hazards.
