Treating Burns

Burns can be caused by fire, electricity and corrosive chemicals such as acids, and strong alkalis. Burns can also be caused by water or hot oil.

Burned by the fire;

  • If the victim's clothing was on fire, first turn off the fire. 
  • Do not remove the pieces of clothing that clings to the body on fire. 
  • Do not break any blisters. 
  • Do not rub the oily substance in the burned area as difficult washed later. 
  • Drain the water in the burned area for several minutes. 
  • Give painkillers to relieve the pain of the victims. 
  • Cover the body burns with a clean cloth. 
  • Give emotional support and sugary drinks such as glucose to avoid shock to the victim. 
  • Do not give the victim warm drinks to avoid sweating. 
  • Send victim to a clinic or hospital for further treatment.




Burns due to contact with chemicals;

  • Drain water for at least 5 minutes in the victim's body was burnt to prevent further damage to the tissues. 
  • Cut using scissors or remove clothing adsorbed chemicals. Be careful so that rescuers and victims were not contact to chemicals. 
  • Wash the body with the liquid purpose of healing burns or neutraliser:                                                                    a. If acid - use lotion of sodium bicarbonate concentration of 5%.                                                  b. If alkali - use diluted citric acid or vinegar. 
  • Send victim to a clinic or hospital for further treatment.
