Effect of Electric Current on Body

DIRECT EFFECT
Happens when the current passes through human body and produces heat. Arcing happens when conductor is held closed to live conductor

BURNS

  • Happens at point of entry and exit (fingers and toes)
  • May burn tissues and damage vital organs (heart and lungs)
  • Energized powered equipment where the circuits are exposed

EFFECT OF ELECTRIC CURRENT ON BODY
  • Has no effect 1 mA or less
  • Painless shock 1-8 mA
  • Painful shock; electrical source can be released 8-15 mA
  • Painful shock; not be released 15-20 mA (loss of muscle control)
  • Affect function of lungs and heart at 20-500 mA - Muscular ventricular fibrillation of the heart which can 100-200 mA cause death Burns and severe contraction in the muscle, causing 200 mA or more heart to stop.

DIRECT EFFECT - RESPIRATORY & HEART FAILURE
Electrical current (20 mA) may interfere with muscle functions of the heart and lungs. Should the chest muscles become affected, breathing may cease and heart stops beating. CPR and AED(Automated External Defibrillators) must be given immediately.

INDIRECT EFFECT - EFFECT FALL FIRE AND EXPLOSION
May cause brain damage, fractures, or injuries. May cause severe burns and injuries.
