Construction Safety : Hoarding - The tragedies that occurred in construction sites, which made headlines in the newspapers bring worry for the public especially when road users through the construction area, particularly involving skyscrapers.
The worksite should be fully barricaded by protective hoarding so that the public would be protected from work that is being carried out. The hoarding should not only be able to protect the public from dangers within the site but also act as barrier or security to prevent others from trespassing into the worksite.
The hoarding should not be less than 1800mm in height and continuous down to the ground. It should be designed and constructed properly in accordance to the specification of the local authority and should be maintained in good condition.
There should be an adequate safety distance between the worksite and the hoarding.
Where the distance from a public place to the building being constructed is such that there is the likelihood of falling materials striking pedestrian or vehicular traffic, a roof or gantry should be required.
During the erection of the hoarding surrounding worksite, safe work procedures should be followed to ensure safety of the public.
Doorway to the worksite should be located in such a manner as to prevent danger and inconveniences to the public. Proper security should be provided to prevent unauthorised persons and public entering into the worksite.
Appropriate warning signs should be provided in a conspicuous place.
Arrangement should be made to avoid any parking or hawking activities at the surrounding perimeter of the hoarding when there are high-risk activities or operations being carried out that may cause a hazard to the surrounding.
All building materials should be stored and handled within the hoarded area.
Structures of construction machinery should be so located within the hoarded area as not to compromise the safety of the public if the structure collapses.
Gates should be of suitable design and adequate strength.
It is very important for all those involved in the construction industry that is always sensitive to public safety issues and take all necessary measures to prevent accidents in the workplace.
If safety standards are complied with, and the procedures and safety regulations are followed, believe that accidents, loss of life or injury can be avoided.
