Biological Safety


Biological Safety - In the operation of biology laboratory is essential to work according to the procedures, techniques and safe practices and  standard. It is the employee's responsibility to  protect themselves and others from contracting the disease and to ensure that the materials used or studied not dispersed into the environment. 

In order to ensure safety, work rules to be observed in as well as safety equipment and complete laboratory as well as functional. Therefore some general safety rules should always be followed and continued practice.



All general laboratory safety rules must be complied with. In addition the following rules should be followed.
  • International biohazard symbol shall be placed at the door of the laboratory who work with microorganisms in Risk Groups 2, 3 and 4. For laboratory risk groups 3 and 4, the name of the microorganisms involved and the supervisor in charge should be written in a biohazard symbol.
  • Laboratories should be kept clean, tidy and free from materials that are not related to work.
  • Only individuals who were aware of the potential dangers and meet the requirements to get admitted
  • to the laboratory work area.
  • Laboratory door should always be closed during the work is running.
  • Suitable gloves should be worn in all procedures that involve direct contact with blood, infectious materials or infected animals. After use, gloves shall be removed aseptically and autoclaved before disposal.
  • All technical procedures should be performed with ways to minimize the formation of aerosols.
  • Each laboratory should have additional equipment for prevent the entry of rodents and arthropods.
  • All animal studies were not involved in the work  laboratory shall be kept in storage animals and not be in or near laboratory.
  • The use of hypodermic needles and syringes should be work is limited to the injection and intake fluids from laboratory animals only.
  • Gloves that can be used again should be washed while it was still worn. Once removed it should be cleaned and disinfected before reuse.
  • All materials, specimens and cultures that have been contaminated must be decontaminated before disposal or washing.
  • Work surfaces shall be decontaminated on completion of work and each time there has been a spill of potentially dangerous.
  • All spills, accidents or exposure to infectious materials must be immediately reported to a supervisor, incident officer, or on duty laboratory staff.
  • All laboratory personnel should undergo biohazad medical assessments, periodic monitoring or appropriate treatment.
  • When working in the category of closed labs and maximum indoor laboratory, the following rules  should be observed:
             -Work of two people to be complied with, an individual cannot work alone.
             -Laboratory clothing must be of the cover type, full sleeve, covered head (wrap-
              around, coverall, head covering). Clothing should be kind of cleavage and
              buttoned at the back.
             -Workers should wear special shoes or shoe covers.
             -Breathing apparatus should be worn in rooms containing infected animals.
